Nigeria Proposes ₦1,350 Petrol Price Cap as Rising Oil Costs Intensify Economic Pressures

Nigeria petrol price cap proposal as rising fuel costs affect the economy and consumers.

Nigeria is considering a proposed petrol price cap of about ₦1,350 per litre as rising global oil prices increase pressure on fuel costs and household spending.

According to a Reuters report published on October 9, Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele said the government was considering measures to limit petrol price volatility, including asking refiners and fuel importers to absorb temporary cost increases and recover losses when market conditions improve.

The government is also considering a 30-day fuel discount programme aimed at easing transportation costs, with public transport users among the intended beneficiaries.

The proposal comes as international oil market uncertainty continues to affect energy prices and raise concerns about inflation across oil-importing and oil-producing economies.

For Nigeria, the potential impact will depend on how the proposal is implemented, how refiners respond and whether global crude oil prices remain elevated.

Investors and businesses will be watching for further government announcements, particularly any changes affecting the petroleum industry, transportation costs and consumer spending.
