ABUJA, Nigeria — October 10, 2026
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has extended its ₦66-per-litre petrol discount at its retail stations nationwide until October 31, 2026, as households and businesses continue to face rising fuel costs.
In a statement issued on October 9, the company said the discount, initially introduced on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, would continue throughout the month. NNPC described the initiative as temporary customer relief rather than a return to the former fuel subsidy programme.
The extension followed the Federal Government’s announcement of additional measures to cushion the impact of higher global crude oil prices on Nigerian consumers. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele said the government’s 30-day arrangement would prioritise public transport operators.
However, access to the discount may depend on payment arrangements. Punch Newspapers reported on October 10 that motorists at NNPC outlets visited in Abuja paid different prices depending on whether they used the company’s mobile application or paid directly at the pump. Customers should confirm the applicable terms at their local station.
The measure comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with transportation and business costs. Although the discount may provide some temporary relief, its overall impact on transport fares and the prices of essential goods remains uncertain.
NNPC said the initiative applies to its retail outlets and does not establish a uniform petrol price across Nigeria.
